Observations From Week 1.

Every week I will narrow down all the happenings in college football and review one topic that stuck out to me.  I will try to avoid the most commonly talked about story lines and come from a different perspective.  Feelings are likely to get hurt and more than likely someone (if anyone chooses to read these) will call me a moron.  So be it.

The Fifth Best Team in Virginia

Man it must suck to be Al Groh.  Remember almost a decade ago when Groh was a head coach in the NFL and things were looking fabulous for his career.  Then out of nowhere he received a calling to return to his Alma Mater and lead a rebirth of Virginia Cavalier football.  Hmm, mulligan please.  Groh and his Cavs were always going to be the other team in Virginia with the likes of Va. Tech and Beamer Ball down the road.  However never in anyone's wildest dreams, or nightmares depending on perspective, would any Cavalier fans think that they could be, at best, the fifth best team in their own state.
On Saturday, in their home stadium, against FCS opponent William & Mary, in what should be called the "Thomas Jefferson Bowl" (Jefferson was a W & M grad. and is considered the founder of UVA.) the Cavaliers were upset in game that can best be called humiliating.  So the following is the complex formula I used to rank the Cavs at #5.
William & Mary is an above average team from the Colonial Conference.  The top team from the Colonial Conference is the Richmond Spiders, who are coming off a FCS National Championship and a week 1 victory over Duke.  Last season the Dukies beat the fighting Grohs last season 31-3, while Richmond beat the W & M Tribe.  Now the Wild Card, James Madison is ranked ahead of the Tribe in the FCS Coaches' Poll and defeated William & Mary last season.  So if you take this info and the square root of Groh's career 56-44 record and mulitply that by the 114th ranked scoring offense of Virginia in 08-09.  Then take that and divide it by the four new coaches in Charlottesville and you got a pile of crap that is the Virginia Cavalier Varsity Football Club.  So let the rankings show...

1. Virginia Tech Hokies
2. Richmond Spiders
3. James Madison Dukes
4. William & Mary Tribe
5. Virginia Cavaliers
6. Hampton Pirates

It's ok Al, your next logical job will be head coach at either Auburn or for the Oakland Raiders.
